Scaled Quail Flush Count Surveys

The 2nd Annual Scaled Quail Flush Count Surveys will take place on Saturday September 24th, 2016. Our base of operations will be at the Stockton Pass Campground located on US-266 East of Bonita (see directions below).

We need volunteers with dogs to run the routes and volunteers without dogs to walk the routes and assist with collecting the data. We want to get an early start to prevent overheating the dogs and volunteers, so plan to arrive at the campground before 8:00AM. Johnathan and I will be arriving on Friday afternoon for those who wish to come out early and camp out.

The longest routes are 2.5 miles. The objective is to run the dogs quartering along a transect line to locate birds. Once birds are located, allow the dogs to flush the birds, count the number flushed, identify the species, and collect the GPS coordinates of where the covey was flushed from. This is why it is helpful to have the dog handler keeping the dogs generally following the transect line and the second volunteer managing data collection.

I’d like any volunteers who for sure can make it to RSVP by September 10th through email (wzarlingo@azgfd.gov) so I know roughly how many to expect. We have several treated and untreated pastures that we can run so no one will be turned away even if you don’t RSVP. However, I want to ensure there is at least coverage on those pastures with the highest priority.

The Department can use your time and mileage as volunteer match for Federal funds. Please keep track of this information as you will be asked to complete a volunteer form at this event.
