{"id":1651,"date":"2020-11-05T13:49:40","date_gmt":"2020-11-05T20:49:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saquailforever.com\/?p=1651"},"modified":"2024-01-09T09:38:03","modified_gmt":"2024-01-09T16:38:03","slug":"november-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saquailforever.com\/dev\/november-update\/","title":{"rendered":"November Update"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-rounded\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saquailforever.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/IMG_5099-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1648\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Overview:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our monsoon rainfall which drives Mearns\u2019 numbers is the 2nd worse on record.\u00a0 All is not lost &#8211;\u00a0 Gambel\u2019s numbers are good after a couple of consecutive good winter rain years.\u00a0 Our loose rock dams help during below average rainfall years by slowing runoff to keep water in the soil longer.<br>We are not done with COVID &#8211; cases in AZ are up as predicted.\u00a0 Expect the chapter to have few gatherings until it comes under control.<br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Habitat:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saquailforever.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/IMG_5100-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1646\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We have already completed several Water for Wildlife well modification projects at BANWR to support quail and other wildlife.\u00a0 This has been particularly important in light of our poor monsoon.<br>Borderlands Restoration Network (BRN) has started collecting seeds to make seedballs in the Coronado National Forest.\u00a0 This is an important part of the grasslands project along the border with Mexico.\u00a0 This is prime Mearns\u2019 quail country.\u00a0 The work will involve volunteer labor, contract labor and provide high school age youth with a part time summer job and training on conservation.\u00a0 We have received a $35,000 matching fund grant from National Forest Foundation which means any donation the chapter receives will be matched. CNF road manager is working to have a road in place for the 21\/22 season.\u00a0 We expect to see a letter requesting comment from the ranger district soon.<br>The conservation easement and public access easement on ranch land near Tombstone has been completed.\u00a0 This project is primarily funded by NRCS, AZ G&amp;F and AZ Land and Water Trust\u00a0 It will open 2,100-acres of prime wildlife habitat to public recreation via a permanent conservation easement and public access easement.\u00a0 Both AZ QF Chapters provided funding plus we received a grant from AZSFWC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Masked Bobwhite Quail (MBW) at Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge (BANWR):<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saquailforever.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/70792226_940663229601943_6405240605772873728_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1536\"\/><figcaption>Masked Bobwhite <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From Rebecca Chester:\u00a0 By the end of next week, we will have released about 700 chicks in 50 broods, with more to come in a few weeks.\u00a0 A big thanks to SAQF members, who continue to assist with projects like pen repairs and installing lines at wells to provide water for quail and other wildlife.\u00a0 Based on the results we saw last season any wild born chicks would be hatching now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>AZ Sportsman for Wildlife Conservation (AZSFWC) and Arizona Wildlife Federation (AWF):<\/strong>SAQF is part of AZSFWC.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\"
