{"id":1627,"date":"2020-09-01T10:37:18","date_gmt":"2020-09-01T17:37:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saquailforever.com\/?p=1627"},"modified":"2024-01-09T09:40:17","modified_gmt":"2024-01-09T16:40:17","slug":"september-newsletter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saquailforever.com\/dev\/september-newsletter\/","title":{"rendered":"September Newsletter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saquailforever.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/1-3-1-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1622\"\/><figcaption>Levy Water Lines @ BANWR <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overview<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arizona COVID case numbers are continuing to go down.\u00a0 Our board has reviewed member input from our survey to update our schedule.\u00a0 With the current guidelines we would be hard pressed to find speakers for our meetings. \u00a0 We have cancelled all our indoor events.\u00a0 We will continue with our outdoor events that can be conducted safely.\u00a0 Get outside as much as you can and take your dogs with you.\u00a0<br>We are seeing quite a few Gambel\u2019s.\u00a0 All indications promise better desert quail numbers this coming season.\u00a0 The monsoon which drives Mearns\u2019 numbers has continued very poor. \u00a0 Our loose rock dams help during below average rainfall years by keeping more water in the soil longer.<br>We are looking to add a couple of dog training events at Empire Ranch in Oct and Nov.\u00a0 These will be relatively small events with 6-8 participants.\u00a0 We will work to have pen raised birds and a few knowledgable dog folks.<br>Many of the guides and outfitters that have supplied the chapter with hunts and trips for our banquet are struggling with their businesses.\u00a0 They have stepped up and helped the chapter in many ways.\u00a0 If you have trouble scheduling a banquet trip or hunt please have some patience and reach out to the chapter if you need help.<br><strong>Habitat:<\/strong>We have already completed several Water for Wildlife well modification projects at BANWR to support quail and other wildlife.\u00a0 This has been particularly important based on our very poor monsoon rainfall.<br>We are planning significant habitat work including seeding in the Coronado National Forest along the border with Mexico.\u00a0 This is prime Mearns\u2019 quail country.\u00a0 The work will involve volunteer labor and contract labor from Borderlands Restoration Network.\u00a0 We have received a $35,000 matching fund grant from National Forest Foundation which means any donation the chapter receives will be matched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>North American Model for Wildlife Conservation<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saquailforever.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_3990-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1425\"\/><figcaption>Mearns Quail <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>North American Model for Wildlife Conservation:<\/strong>Here is an example of why it is important to keep wildlife management in the hands of our professionals in state wildlife agencies.\u00a0\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sportingclassicsdaily.com\/wolf-wars-move-to-the-ballot-box\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/sportingclassicsdaily.com\/wolf-wars-move-to-the-ballot-box\/<\/a><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sportsmen and Women Impact in Arizona<\/strong>&#8211;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saquailforever.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/77693_1432104857238_5558381_o-1-1024x736.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1601\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hunters and Anglers spend $1.3B per year-Pumps $3.8M a day into the state\u2019s economy-This spending supports 21,000 jobs and generates $124M in taxes-Especially benefits rural communities.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Access to Public Lands:<\/strong>&#8211;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saquailforever.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/DSC03345-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1421\"\/><figcaption>Public Lands <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreement between the Crown C HOA and AZ G&amp;F providing a sign in box and access to Hog Canyon was reconsidered by the HOA based on input from some landowners that wanted to close access.\u00a0 The HOA did a new vote where open access was passed &#8211; this will likely result in opening Adobe Canyon once an agreement is made with AZ G&amp;F.\u00a0 Will keep you advised of progress.\u00a0 Be sure to use the sign in box or risk a trespassing citation.<br>-Meadow Valley road bypass is still moving forward slowly.\u00a0 The pacing factor is the environmental study required by NEPA. CNF road manager is working to have a road in place for the 21\/22 season.\u00a0 We expect to see a letter requesting comment from the ranger district in October or November.<br>The conservation easement and public access easement on ranch land near Tombstone has been completed.\u00a0 This project is primarily funded by NRCS, AZ G&amp;F and AZ Land and Water Trust\u00a0 It will open 2,100-acres of prime wildlife habitat to public recreation via a permanent conservation easement and public access easement.\u00a0 Both AZ QF Chapters provided funding plus we received a grant from AZSFWC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Masked Bobwhite Quail (MBW) at Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saquailforever.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/70792226_940663229601943_6405240605772873728_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1536\"\/><figcaption>Masked will have released about 700 chicks in 50 broods, with more to come in a few weeks.\u00a0 A big thanks to SAQF members, who continue to assist with projects like pen repairs and installing small lines 14 year old hunting buddy.\u00a0 He is willing to take on an experienced dog that someone else may not be able to care for during the COVID shutdown and take good care of it for the remainder of its volunteer help and communicate with other wildlife and conservation organizations.<br>Please consider purchasing a AZSFWC license plate to support wildlife when you renew your current AZ plate through Service Arizona.\u00a0 The fee for this license supports the conservation grants provided by AZSFWC.\u00a0 Our Family Day\/Youth Hunt has received AZSFWC grant support the last two years.<br>AZSFWC is
