{"id":1381,"date":"2019-10-27T09:51:47","date_gmt":"2019-10-27T16:51:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saquailforever.com\/?p=1381"},"modified":"2024-01-09T10:13:04","modified_gmt":"2024-01-09T17:13:04","slug":"s-a-q-f-november-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saquailforever.com\/dev\/s-a-q-f-november-news\/","title":{"rendered":"S.A.Q.F November News"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overview <strong>O<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saquailforever.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/DSC_0152-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1347\"\/><figcaption>Desert Quail Hunting  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gambels and Scaled Quail seasons have kicked off.\u00a0 The numbers are better than the last few years but I would call them below average.\u00a0 Thanks to all that helped AZ G&amp;F with quail check stations in Pinal County.\u00a0 Many hunters coming through the stations reporting seeing quite a few running skittish quail.\u00a0 Most were not using dogs and their shot success was poor.<br>Brian Tackett and Steve Geerligs have resigned from our board.\u00a0 We certainly appreciate the support they have provided.\u00a0 Sarah Gandaria is replacing Steve as the treasurer on an interim basis until we can get a membership vote at our first meeting in Nov.\u00a0 Mike Wilbur has moved to Oklahoma for a new job but will attempt to be back to help us with Family Day next spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saquailforever.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DSC09177-2-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1179\"\/><figcaption>Arizona Scenery <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>If you have never attended the Empire Ranch Cowboy Festival you would find it worthwhile.\u00a0 It is scheduled Sat 2 Nov from 10 AM to 4 PM.\u00a0 Additional info is available at\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.empireranchfoundation.org\/ranch-events\/cowboy-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.empireranchfoundation.org\/ranch-events\/cowboy-festival\/<\/a>.\u00a0 We will be in the AZ G&amp;F tent.<br><strong>Habitat:<\/strong>We met with US Fish and Wildlife to review the overall habitat plan for Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge (BANWR).\u00a0 We are looking to develop AZ Habitat Partnership Committee (HPC) grants to help provide state funding to support Masked Bobwhite Quail and the wildlife.<br>We are working with AZ G&amp;F and BLM in Sierra Vista to install quail ramps on water tanks. AZ G&amp;F and BLM have purchased the extruded metal ramps and installation hardware and are now are getting the metal cut, bent and painted. This should be a great project to help quail access water safely and meet more area ranchers which might lead to more projects on their property.\u00a0<br>We are working together with the Valley of the Sun Chapter out of Phoenix to fund a conservation easement and public access easement on ranch land near Tombstone.\u00a0 This land abuts public land resulting in a very large parcel.\u00a0 A conservation easement prevents the land from from being developed and the public access agreement will allow you hunting on the property in perpetuity.\u00a0 We expect the need to do some habitat work in the future.\u00a0 This land is primarily scaled quail country.\u00a0 AZ G&amp;F, AZ Land Trust and US Dept of Agriculture are putting the vast majority of funding into this purchase.\u00a0 AZSFWC is also providing a grant.\u00a0 Once all other moneys are in place we will actually cut a check.<br><strong>A<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Access to Public Lands:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saquailforever.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_2828-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1346\"\/><figcaption>Public Lands featured in the QF Magazine <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We will continue to do our road cleanup on highway 82 to promote a positive image of the chapter and to keep Hog Canyon access open.\u00a0 The formal agreement between the homeowners and AZ G&amp;F is complete.\u00a0 Expect to see a sign in box as you enter the private road leading to Hog Canyon.\u00a0 Access to Adobe Canyon is still in work.<br>Walt Keyes, the road manager for Coronado National Forest is still working the process for approval of a planned by-pass road to reopen road access into the Meadow Valley area.\u00a0 The by-pass will not be open for this season.\u00a0 Walt is scheduled to speak at our Jan meeting.<br>Please be respectful of and make sure your actions do not impact public and private land.\u00a0 Close gates, pick up trash (yours and others) and keep speed and dust down.<br>Our next road cleanup is scheduled Sat 30 Nov at 9 AM.\u00a0 Meet at the entrance to Hog Canyon.\u00a0 Contact Ron Walp at\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"mailto:couesaz2011@gmail.com\" target=\"_blank\">couesaz2011@gmail.com<\/a>\u00a0if you are able to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Buenos Aires NWR<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saquailforever.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/BANWR-100518-137.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1384\"\/><figcaption>Masked Bobwhite Chick<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last few months US F&amp;W have released 650 masked bobwhite chicks. This is now a priority for almost all outdoor groups and G&amp;F from all 50 states.
