Mearns Quail

Hello Arizona Mearns’ quail hunters!
You are receiving this email because you submitted your email along with your wings during Mearns’ quail season last year. I apologize for the delay in sending you this update, but it has been a very busy start to the year and things can just get away from you.
Overall, we saw a slight uptick in the number of wings submitted over previous years (1,279 this year vs. 975 the previous season). A big thanks for that goes out to the Southern Chapter of Quail Forever for encouraging hunters to submit their wings into the barrels for this valuable data. We are also very glad to partner with the Chapter on the QuailFest event held in Sonoita during the opening weekend of Mearns’ season.
Here’s how last year stacked up against the long term average.

2018-19 SeasonLong Term Averages
% juveniles in the harvest73.10%72.10%

As many of you experienced in the field, things were a little down over the previous season, but not bad overall. We ended up just a little below average on the season. The really good news was the amount of juveniles in the harvest. This tells us we should have a good stock of birds going into breeding season this year. Now if we can only get the rain to cooperate!
We really appreciate that you submitted your wings this last season. Please continue to do so and encourage your friends and other hunters as well. The only way we can keep you better informed about what’s going on with Mearns’ on the ground is to help us collect more and better data. Thanks again!
